Daughters Of Wisdom is an intimate portrait of the nuns of the Kala Rongo Monastery in Nangchen, Tibet. In Nangchen, to have a son become a monk has traditionally been a high honor for a family, granting him the privilege to serve the community as a scholar and spiritual leader, and to transcend the hardships of everyday life; but to have a daughter become a nun has been considered a burden, as she can no longer be married off in exchange for livestock, or bear children who can work the family farm in this predominantly subsistence agricultural society. These nearly 300 extraordinary women of Nangchen have built the ever-growing Kala Rongo Monastery with their own hands, and thus have created for themselves an opportunity to study and practice full time. In doing so, they are preserving their rich cultural heritage even as they slowly reshape it.
Some shy, some outspoken, all committed to the often difficult life they have chosen, the nuns have graciously allowed this never-before-seen glimpse into their vibrant spiritual community and insight into their remarkable lives.more...
