DoW picture Present in All That We Do
November 6, 2008
7pm - 9pm
UW Ethnic Cultural Theatre ( 3931 Brooklyn Ave NE )
** Andrew Hedden and Ian Morgan will be present for Q&A

In 1907, more than two-hundred South Asian workers in Bellingham, WA were attacked by a mob of white workers. The white rioters broke into the South Asians' houses and workplaces, stole and destroyed their valuables, and threatened and beat the South Asians until they were forcibly expelled from the city. In the course of one night, an entire community was driven from the town - in the approving words of a local paper, "wiped off the map."

Present In All That We Do explores the legacy of Bellingham, WA’s history of anti-immigrant racism, providing accounts of anti-Chinese campaigns in the 1880s, anti-South Asian violence in 1907, and Japanese internment. One hundred years later, 2007, hostility towards non-white immigrants in Bellingham continues. How have the events of 1907 shaped Bellingham as we know it today? What has changed and what remains the same? In asking these questions, this film seeks to embody James Baldwin’s conviction that “history is literally present in all that we do.”

The filmmakers will be in attendance to answer questions. Sponsored by the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies. For more information, call 206-543-7946, or e-mail pcls@u.washington.edu.
