Volunteer Corner

Let's find out what each volunteer is most looking forward to seeing with you.

Rita Meher, Festival Director
Damned RainGabricha Paus:The Damned Rain: When I previewed this film, I was simply blown away by the beauty of this film, with perfect cinematography, story line, acting, and simplicity- no frills film. If there is one perfect film to watch, this is the one!!! "Gabricha Paus is a tale of a frightened wife’s attempts to save her husband from the clutches of death. The plot revolves around the counsels she receives from her recently widowed friend whose husband commits suicide due to mounting debts."  The dark comedy of the film will suck you in and make you leave the theater in utter shock , a satisfactory one!

Living GhostThe Living Ghost: My personal favorite. Being an Oriya, I am so excited to see this beautiful film about a tribe, their love and struggle, where my family tends to come from. It is a special tribute to my family! "On one level it is the story of a simple villager Bangaru, of the Dongriya tribe who lives in up in the hills. Yet on another level, it also succeeds in capturing the pain of all that is good and innocent in this tribal community, as their way of life is steadily eroded by outside influences. All under the guise of ‘modernization'." - Sunaina Serna Ahluwalia

ISAFF Production Note

So, Day 2 of our promotional work for ISAFF 2009 kicked off with an utterly jarring and uncomfortable event. We were circulating our fabulous fliers and posters around Bellevue and took another halt at a South-Indian restaurant at Crossroads. While we (Rita and Matrayi) were chatting with the management there and sharing info about ISAFF, this gentleman comes up to the counter to pay his bill. A middle-aged guy of average built, wearing round spectacles and sporting desi kurta pajama, he asked us about ISAFF 2009, out of curiosity.

When we told him that this is a 'South Asian' event, he lost his cool and accused us of being the reason behind all the terrorist attacks that have happened in our part of the world. He also didn't mince any words when he said that 'we' had made our country the laughing stock of the world because of our peace-loving theme and attitude. According to him, we were being naive in our pursuit of a UNITED South Asia. We stood there, left agape with shock and anger. We fumbled with a good response, but clearly this person had a set agenda on his mind and no amount of reasoning would have worked with him. He seemed pre-conditioned and determined to believe in his ideology of hatred.

In a matter of five minutes, a non-event became an event and we found ourselves facing a hardcore Hindu zealot in the guise of a successful techie from Bellevue.
